It’s never perfect…
What I absolutely love about my Sadhana practice is it’s imperfection.
I will often set out to practice 40 or 90 day Sadhanas where I’m doing the same practice daily at roughly the same time. The beautiful benefit of this type of practice is that if builds your personal connection, resilience, and devotion. As well as, it’s a deepening with your relationship to the individual practice, whether it’s a physical asana or kryia, a breath practice, chanting, or something else - the consistency of the practice builds upon itself and the magic that can come from this is something hard to describe.
Now, all of that said, there have been very few Sadhana’s where I’ve been able to be 100% perfect. Some days are modified, sometimes the time changes, sometimes the practice is missed all together! And you know what? It’s all okay! It’s perfect in its imperfection!
The beauty of having an imperfect practice it that we get to show ourselves kindness, compassion, forgiveness, and grace. We can begin to let go of the destructive cultural expectations to hustle, never loose, grin and bear it, to compromise our physical, mental and emotional well-being to be an impossible version of perfect.
When I first started practicing Sadhana regularly this was a huge challenge for me. I had a perfectionist mindset and would feel massively guilty if I missed a day or didn’t “do” my meditation perfectly. This mindset was a layover from corporate work to be sure and it did take some time to release - but with continued practice and deepening of my own relationship to yoga and yoga therapy the harshness I set upon myself began to dissolve.
Now in my Sadhana there are days I miss, days that my practice is short, days that are deeply connected and days I can only think about my breakfast, lol. And you know what, all of it supports me. Because I’ve learned to tune into myself, my energy and what I need at any given moment and this has given me so much power off the mat!
Is this Blog perfect…no; is my website perfect…no way; is my Podcast perfect…nope; is my membership HIVE perfect…not really…and that’s what makes it perfect!!! It’s the human-ness of imperfection that we relate to and resonate with, it connects us to others and makes this world a rich tapestry of unique beauty.
Another interpretation some of us have for ‘perfect’ is ‘ready’…we say things to ourselves like, “I can’t launch my product, service, or website because it’s not “perfect”’ aka we don’t feel ready or we fear (false evidence appearing real) xyz…but guess what, you may never feel perfect or ready - wouldn’t you rather take the leap and put your awesome sauce out there? I know the world needs your magic!!! So here it is, your permission slip (not that you need one Queen) go forth and put yourself out there…un-perfect, un-ready and just see what magic unfolds…you got this!
Would I choose to be perfect if I could??? Heck no!!! Seriously, where’s the fun in that?
